About Fleas

Fleas are a common pest problem in homes & businesses, especially properties that have pets or where pets are allowed onto the  premises. If you have recently moved into a property, you may also discover a problem with fleas if previous owners have kept cats or dogs. Fleas may also be carried on other wild animals such as foxes, rats, mice, squirrels & rabbits. Probably the main concern about the presence of fleas in your home or your business will come from their bites. Although flea bites are not painful, they often result in a very uncomfortable itch or possibly a reactive rash. If you have pets, they can be hypersensitive to flea saliva and suffer an allergic reaction.

The average size of adults are 2 millimeters long and dark brown or black in colour. The  flea eggs are 0.5 mm long, oval shaped and pearly white in colour. Up to 20 eggs are laid after each blood meal and a single female is capable of producing several hundred eggs during her lifetime. The larvae are up to 5  millimeters long, and semi-transparent white. The life cycle from egg to adult is normally completed in 4 weeks & the flea life span can be as long as a year and a half under ideal conditions.

The flea is an external parasite which has a life cycle of 4 stages: egg – larva – pupa - adult flea. The entire cycle, from egg to adult flea can be completed in 4 weeks when the temperature and humidity conditions are ideal. A fully pupated adult can remain inside of its cocoon in a state of semi-dormancy for 8 months waiting for signs of a host presence, which may take more than one disturbance to encourage all of the adults out of their cocoon’s.

Fleas largely live in carpets, but may also be found in furniture, beds, and clothing. They will normally feed on a host animal, such as a cat or a dog, but will feed on humans if no other animal is available. As well as being carried by animals, fleas may also be brought into your property on clothing.

Flea Treatment

Before any treatment is carried out, clear as much floor space as possible to ensure that treatment is as thorough as possible. Floors and furniture must be thoroughly cleaned and vacuumed. If you have pets, attention should be paid to your pets bedding and places where your pets frequent. Domestic pets should be regularly treated with an appropriate flea product under the direction of a vet. Any clothing & bedding which may be Infested should be thoroughly cleaned. Being thorough is important when treating a flea infestation as problems can quickly return  if an area is not treated sufficiently.
